How long can my baby stay in her wrap baby carrier?

It all depends on which type of baby carrier you are using. A Baby Bjorn or similar is so uncomfortable for both you and baby that you shouldn't use it for more than a few hours every day. A ring sling is fantastic for short journeys and when you need to quickly pop baby in but I don't recommend using it too much (and you should swap shoulders) because the weight is concentrated on one shoulder only. But a traditional baby carrier, eg a wrap, can be used 24 hours a day if you feel like it. The fabric of a wrap spreads nicely on your back and baby's weight is distributed between both of your shoulders and your waist. Did you know that in Bali (where the Wrapsody carriers are made by the way!), it is a custom never to let a baby's feet touch the ground for the first six months?

In her book, The Continuum Concept, Jean Liedloff describes how the Yequana babies are constantly carried by their mothers. If she needs to get up, she takes the baby with her in a cloth carrier. She is not afraid to move while her baby sleeps because he gets used to the movement of her mother's body and is actually reassured by the motion. This intense babywearing provides the babies with so much security and trust that they grow into extremely independent and autonomous children.

Wrapsody carriers have been designed with the comfort of the mother and the optimal anatomic position of the baby in mind. Wrapsody carriers are doctor endorsed and comply with all the CPSC regulations. For comfortable babywearing, you should remember to always make the wrap really tight (no need to untie it to make it tighter while baby is carried) and put your baby's legs in the frog or buddha position.

Carrying premature babies and small babies in your Zolowear ring sling: the
cradle position

You can carry your baby safely in your Zolowear ring sling. The cradle position is suitable for premature babies and small babies up to 3 months who have no head control yet. Baby will be comfortable in a cradle with her head opposite the rings (first video). The semi-reclining hold (second video) is good to avoid reflux. ALWAYS ensure baby is getting good air flow at all times. Safety tip: tuck your thumb under baby’s chin. It should always be comfortable to do so at all times.

Frogs and Buddhas or Babies getting purple legs in slings

When I first started using my wrap baby carrier soon after Rachel’s birth, I read that baby should be in the Buddha position. Buddha? For me, Buddha is sitting with his legs crossed like we do in yoga class. So I crossed the legs of my baby inside the wrap, poor thing! While it may sound obvious to most of you, it was not for me. So I’ll try to explain what is Buddha or Frog position and why it’s helpful to avoid baby getting purple legs in a sling, wrap or soft structured baby carrier.

If you carry your baby on your hip, you’ll notice that she will naturally have her legs around your waist with knees higher than bottom. This is the optimal anatomic position for a baby. The is why I am not recommending the “crotch dangler” baby carriers you find on the high street because it put unhealthy pressure on baby, doesn’t allow a good hip and spine development and can cause undue postural distortions to both the mother and baby.

The weight should all be on your baby’s bottom. If her bottom is low enough in the Buddha or Frog position, there should be little stress on the legs, thus preventing your baby getting purple legs or white spots on the legs.

For more information about this important subject, please have a look at International Chiropractic Pediatric Association Babywearing Research.

Frog or Buddha position = baby has her knees higher then her bottom as if she was deeply squatting. When somebody is facing you, they should see her legs bent with the knees higher than the bottom, forming a big letter “M”.

With a newborn, you can have baby’s legs inside the wrap or ring sling. Always make sure her legs are in the Frog or Buddha position.

Your baby’s back should be nicely rounded in the baby carrier, to avoid a straight or even worse hollow back position.

Ensuring your baby is in a correct position in your sling baby carrier is important for safe babywearing. You may also want to have a look at our neck support tips and advice.

I also recommend to vary babywearing positions: on the front, hip and back and vary baby carriers style: wraps, ring slings and soft carriers.

Lastly, please read this excellent article about choosing a baby carrier to prevent backaches and other spinal stresses.

Adjusting your Zolowear sling fabric through the rings

Marianne from France contacted us to say her Zolowear Berry organic cotton ring sling was impossible to use. She finds her sling hard to adjust because the fabric doesn't move easily in the rings and the heavy fabric looks more like a mei tai fabric.... She thinks it's impossible to use despite all the Zolowear videos which she thinks are great.

Your Zolowear organic cotton ring sling fabric

Zolowear ring slings are made in quality fabric that won’t slip when your baby is in the carrier. Ring slings whih are made with slippery fabric require constant re-adjusting.

Zolowear organic cotton twill is a supportive fabric suitable for a heavy toddler whereas light fabrics would be prone to wear and tear. The Zolowear organic cotton twill is probably thicker than the stretch cotton sateen so it makes the Zolowear organic ring slings an excellent choice for the cooler months.

A couple of washes will soften your sling fabric a little.

Tips to adjust your Zolowear organic cotton ring sling

Make sure that the bottom rail is at the right height (in the sling zone) before you put baby in the sling. Then you’ll only have the top rail to adjust.

Loosen the top rail before placing baby in the carrier.

Have the rings slightly higher on your shoulder than they need to be as your baby’s weight will shift them down.

Put baby in your ring sling, use your arm to support the weight of your baby and tighten slack in the top rail by pulling up and over.

Great! Your Zolowear organic cotton ring sling will not need adjusting for a long time because the fabric won’t slip.

How to take your baby out of your Zolowear organic cotton ring sling

Put your fingers between the rings and loosen the top rail.

Supporting your baby with one arm can help loosen the rail.
